Speculations have been rife ever since Suresh Raina announced that he would be pulling out of IPL 2020. While he cited ‘personal reasons’ for the sudden decision, there were rumours of a fall-out with CSK, a rift with Dhoni and of him being less than happy with the hotel room arrangements in Dubai. However, he broke his silence on returning from Dubai. He revealed that a terrible tragedy occurred in his family back in Punjab. It was a personal decision and Raina decided to come back to his family. There was something that needed to be addressed immediately on the home front”, Raina told Cricbuzz earlier. The incident revolved around his family, which seemed to be a robbery that took place on the night of August 19th which led to his uncle being killed.
Raina took to Twitter on Tuesday demanding a probe into the incident. “What happened to my family in Punjab was beyond horrible. My uncle was slaughtered to death, my paternal aunt and both my cousins had severe injuries. Unfortunately, my cousin also passed away last night after battling for life for days. My Bua (aunt) is still very very critical and is on life support. Till date, we don’t know what exactly happened that night and who did this. I request @PunjabPolice to look into this matter. We at least deserve to know who was behind this heinous act. Those criminals should not be spared to commit more crimes. @capt amarinder@CMOPb”, he added and tagged Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh. The CM tweeted back, “Condole the brutal attack on the kin of @ImRaina in Pathankot. Have ordered SIT probe into the case and have asked @DGPPunjabPolice to identify and arrest the culprits at the earliest. Beta, my DC and SSP have met the family and we will make sure that the guilty are brought to justice”.
Raina’s uncle, Ashok Kumar, who suffered head injuries died on the spot, the night of the attack. Reports suggest members of the Kale Kachhewala gang were responsible for the attack. They entered the house with the intention of looting while members of the family were asleep on the terrace. His cousin, Kaushal Kumar died on Monday night at a private hospital after succumbing to his injuries.
Meanwhile, CSK head Srinivasan said his franchise will always stand by Raina and that he had their complete support. He claimed his earlier ‘prima donna’ comments were taken out of context. He said, “It is important what Suresh is going through right now and give him space.” Raina has said that CSK is his family too and hinted that he may return later this season.
