Chennai Super Kings has been one of the most consistent teams in the history of the IPL. But the 13th edition of the IPL has not been great for the CSK so far. CSK is the only team which has played 3 matches in the first week of the IPL but except the opening match they had to face defeat at the hands of Rajasthan Royals and Delhi Capitals. The team must be trying to figure out the reasons for not so great performance. Coach Stephen Fleming already had declared that the team would have to do some soul searching. We also have done some soul searching for the CSK. Let’s have a look at the weak points that the CSK needs to work upon.

SPINNERS AT REST

Spinners have been the strength of the CSK but till now Ravindra Jadeja and Piyush Chawal have not been able to show their magic in the 23th edition of the IPL. They have showed great game in the previous seasons at Chepauk in particular but have not been able to gauge the conditions at UAE. They have not only been struggling in taking wickets but also have given too many boundaries. The game has been so bad till now that even Captain Cool could not hold himself back. Dhoni had to say, “The spinners are struggling to adjust and find the right pace to bowl through the middle overs.”

DHONI AT NUMBER 7 AND POWERLESS POWER PLAY

Dhoni is the backbone of the team and his arrival on the pitch at number 7 has been a matter of concern as well as the controversy.   Dhoni has openly said that he had not got much time to practice and doesn’t feel at ease facing the ball, that’s why he chose to come towards the end of the innings. But that should be the primary reason for the player to choose to bat in early order so that he gets more time with the ball. Fleming has already indicated that they will have to rethink about their batting order.

CSK team has appeared to be powerless during the powerplay time. They could restrict Delhi Capitals at 175 runs but early wickets have not been CSK’s thing and that is a matter of concern. If they do not find a way out of this maze, they would find themselves under pressure when introduced after powerplay. Josh Hazelwood and Deepak Chahar will have to find a way with the new ball.

RAYUDU’S ABSENCE

Ambati Rayudu was a big factor in the first win that CSK tasted against the defending champions, Mumbai Indians and at this time the player is away from the field due to his hamstring injury. The last twomatches have clearly shown his importance in the team and how much the batsman is needed. Even Dhoni admitted, “We are lacking a bit of steam in our batting. Maybe the team balance will get better once Rayudu is back for the next game.”
